"LARGE SCALE VESSEL MAKING: TRADITIONAL JAPANESE THROWING TECHNIQUE USING A CONTEMPORARY  BLOWTORCH"

This workshop explores a unique method of throwing large vessels on the potter's wheel in one sitting. Pots that are several feet tall can be created in a few hours. The traditional Japanese method is to begin throwing a pot on the wheel, create a fire with twigs and branches inside the pot to firm up the form. Then coils are added in sections and thrown.  Instead of the smoke, smell, and apparent hazards of fires, a technique using a small blowtorch purchased at any hardware store is demonstrated.  This technique is appropriate for potters on all levels. Go to the the NEW VIDEOS  section on this website for a short video that explains this workshop.

"HOW TO DESIGN AN EFFICIENT  POTTER'S STUDIO AND DEVELOP  CERAMIC CURRICULA"

This workshop enables you to set up a ceramic program for a private studio, school or art center. Learn how to create an ergonomically safe studio, kiln room and storage area. Learn the methods to establish classes in a private studio, and for new teachers, formulate curriculum for all levels of public ed. This workshop is essential for any facility that is interested in ceramic classes as well as  individual ceramists who are interested in teaching in their studios or public spaces. After teaching for thirty-eight years, Jayne established criteria for ceramic education on many levels. She has vast experience in efficient, creative and effective ceramic programming. Her book , " CERAMICS- THE STUDIO WHERE EVERYONE WANTS TO BE, A POTTERS GUIDE IN SETTING UP CERAMIC PROGRAMS AND STUDIO DESIGN" guides you  through the necessary steps in establishing your first studio, public school and ceramic programs for grades K-12 and  Adult classes. Methods towards achieving a successful Potter’s Cooperative, or group studio are included, covering organization, management and rules for  sharing equipment and supplies. Jayne clarifies the dilemma of identification and storage of student work.
